Vale Karl Chehade

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Karl Chehade at the age of 91. A visionary and industrious figure within the Australian community, Karl migrated to Australia in 1951 at the age of 17. He initially settled in Sydney before finding his true home in Adelaide. Despite arriving with no English skills or formal education, Karl’s unwavering determination and entrepreneurial spirit led him to create a remarkable life.

After mastering metalwork and welding at Horwood Bagshaw, Karl ventured into a variety of industries. He worked in the fruit and vegetable sector and opened Mignon, a restaurant on Pulteney Street. In the mid-1950s, Karl and his late brother, Amin, founded Chehade Brothers Menswear, which grew to include tailoring, suit hire, and dry cleaning. This expansion established the brothers’ strong reputation in the clothing industry.

As their families grew, Karl and his devoted wife, Delele, founded Karl Chehade Dry Cleaning. This business flourished, eventually becoming the largest and most environmentally friendly premier dry-cleaning chain in Australia and the country's first national dry cleaner. Karl's commitment to excellence and innovation set new standards in the industry, making him a prolific employer and leader in his field.

Though he retired in the mid-1990s, Karl's restless spirit led him to the olive industry, where he cultivated and produced award-winning extra virgin olive oil and table olives. This venture kept him active until his full retirement around 2015.

Above all, Karl was a devoted family man, deeply connected to his Maronite heritage. He valued loyalty and maintained strong, enduring bonds with family, friends, and colleagues. His dedication to providing education for his children, despite not having had one himself, was a driving force throughout his life. His children have become highly respected professionals in their respective fields in South Australia, a testament to his unwavering commitment to their success.

Karl also played a key role in establishing the Adelaide Maronite Community Church around 1970, becoming one of its original benefactors. He was honoured by the United Lebanese Community Movement for fostering strong ties between the Lebanese and Australian communities.

Karl Chehade will be remembered for his resilience, vision, and the lasting impact he had on the lives of those around him. His legacy lives on through his beloved wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who carry forward his values and spirit.

In honour of his extraordinary contributions, all Karl Chehade Dry Cleaning South Australian stores will close on Friday, 4th October 2024, from 1 pm to 4 pm during the funeral service. This time will be dedicated to reflecting on and celebrating Karl’s incredible life and achievements.
